QUESTIONNAIRE:
→ What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?
Family can be quite complicated, as Kaeya well knows. Sometimes your biological father leaves you, a young child, in some strange land, telling you that you are the last hope for your people before disappearing forever? Sometimes your adoptive father welcomes you into his wealthy household, accepting you as his second son—before dying due to some, ah, shady choices, leaving you to a) unburden your crippling guilt onto your grieving adoptive brother, b) survive said brother's attempt to kill you, thanks to the sudden, strange blessing of the gods, and c) watch said brother abandon both you and the country you've come to love. What a mess, right?
...Right.
Listen: Kaeya is well aware of his missteps. He had no say in his, ah, placement; his (biological) father placed him in the care of an influential family for a reason—and yet, given the warmth with which they (and their country) welcomed him, Kaeya does feel some degree of guilt as to deceiving them for so many years. Diluc, at the very least—Kaeya's sworn brother!—deserved to know the truth of Kaeya's origin, and yet Kaeya kept it hidden for so many years? Only revealed it, in fact, on the day their father died—which just so happened to be his adoptive brother's birthday. Kaeya's selfish, selfish guilt overtook everything, in that moment, leading to both a fight and an estrangement that persists to this day. On paper, at least, Kaeya has no family; he is alone.
But here is the truth, as embarrassing at it is: Kaeya's family is the entirety of Mondstadt? The people who accepted him as a child; the people who appreciate him now that he is a sworn member of the Knights of Favonius—for while Kaeya's methods are infamously sneaky (aka underhanded), Kaeya has never failed to protect them. He is trusted, for better or for worse! There is little he would not do for the people of his (adopted) country.
That said: Kaeya's loyalty is, honestly, limited to a select few. Jean—the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius—can call upon Kaeya for whatever, whenever; there is little he would not do for her, given his status as his right-hand man, but even still: Diluc remains the most important (living) person in Kaeya's life? For, despite Diluc's years-long absence, Diluc is still the person that Kaeya knows best; it's why Kaeya is able to pinpoint him as Mondstadt's elusive Darknight Hero™—and why Kaeya chooses to keep such a secret to himself. Could he unmask this vigilante? Sure. Would it result in a commendation? Absolutely—and yet he keeps quiet, deciding that it's more important to keep Diluc's secret than to rise through the ranks. Family is more important than anything! Even when said family refuses to acknowledge you. It's... complicated.
Kaeya's loyalty, however, is (surprisingly) not.
→ How do you define "success"? What is something you're ambitious about?
Kaeya's version of "success" initially seems different from most—because his methods are so, ah. So unorthodox. He is the type to use his coworkers as bait? To fail to inform them of his plan until they're caught up in it, running from some trap he set and/or knowingly triggered—because that, in his opinion, is hardly his fault. Anyone brave enough to trust him should know to expect the worst; anyone brave enough to trust him should, quite frankly, know better, for he has never bothered to disguise his shadier side. He is who he is...
...Which means that he's far from the Captain™ he's expected to be, but details, details. What matters, in the end, is that Kaeya fulfils whatever objective he is entrusted with—and that Kaeya fulfils it alone, for while his colleagues are running hither and thither, Kaeya is always in control. Why would he bother to share his insight with his "team" when he could simply use them as pawns in his game?
Or: Kaeya is far from nice. While he would prefer not to sacrifice anyone—while he will bend over backwards to ensure that his team will emerge bruised, sure, but Whole—Kaeya is the type of person who prefers to work alone. Success, in his opinion, is achieving his set objective, no matter what—and as that means that teammates are complicatios, Kaeya would prefer to avoid them entirely. It's fine! He's got this! He is used to working alone—
—because maybe what he's ambitious about, in the end, is making somewhat of a name for himself. Protecting his city; scaring others away in the process. Kaeya needs neither fame nor fortune, but when push comes to shove, he would like a nice, safe place to rest his head at night.
→ What is the most frightening thing you've ever done? What part of you did it test the most?
Honestly, the most frightening thing that Kaeya has ever done would be knocking on Diluc's bedroom door after the death of their father? Confessing all that he'd hidden for the past few years—for while Kaeya was (and is) used to lying, honesty remained (remains) difficult. There was simply no telling how Diluc would take his admission; Kaeya, after all, had never been so unflinchingly honest with anyone in his life—which is perhaps why Kaeya waited until this precise moment to share who and what he was. With their father in the grave, there was nothing holding him back—
—which means, at its core, that Kaeya had no one left to protect him. It isn't as though Kaeya was unaware of all that Diluc lost, that day? It isn't as though Kaeya was unaware of Diluc's temper. To confess his deepest, darkest sin—to tell Diluc that he hailed from some long-lost kingdom, left to settle in/spy upon this blessed country—was to abandon all that he held dear.
And yet Kaeya did exactly that.
Why? Well. Perhaps he wanted to clear the air, after the death of someone so important to them both; perhaps he wanted to draw some sort of line in the sand, hoping to separate himself from the country he should not—but did—care for. Either way: Kaeya risked Diluc's disapproval—and bore the brunt of it, brutally, as diluc saw fit to attack him before leaving the country altogether. Kaeya tore apart what was left of his family—which was terrifying, yes, but Kaeya stood strong all the same. He persevered.
And that tested him, of course. It did—but what hurt the most was looking at the newly acquired Vision at his hip and knowing why he'd acquired it? Recognizing the true cost of his truth. His vision was not so much a gift as a reminder to continue lying to the world at large, lest he wind up losing everything once more...
→ What is your favorite diversion? Hobbies, indulgences, vices? Would you put off important things for that diversion, or would you be more strict about how you spend your time and/or money?
Ask anyone in Mondstadt, and they will tell you that Captain Kaeya's vice is a simple (and understandable) one. Oh, sure, he likes to talk to others; oh, sure, he's quite the flirt, but above that—beyond that—Captain Kaeya has a weakness for drink. He's a bit of boozehound!
And it's not, like, entirely wrong.
Or: Kaeya does, indeed, enjoy wine. He can't quite help himself! Put him in his favorite tavern (re: Angel's Share) and he's sure to drink more than his fair share, simply because wine is a gift from the Anemo Archon Himself; it would be rude, really, to deny said Archon the appreciation he very much deserves. Kaeya is only doing his part!
Honestly, though—Kaeya is somewhat of a lush. Not, like, dangerously so? You typically won't catch him overindulging in strange places, surrounded by strange people, but listen: wine does help a man deal with his past and/or various, ah, misdeeds. The world, you see, is simply an easier thing to deal with as it's spinning...
...So.
Kaeya rarely allows this to affect his work; even if he happens to be (re: always is) late to submit paperwork, that's more to do with his laziness than anything else—because there is always a line between business a pleasure, thin though it may sometimes be. It's Kaeya's responsibility to keep Mondsdadt Safe! He takes it quite seriously, thanks, hence his reluctance to overindulge when he is not surrounded by known (and therefore trusted) company. A hobby is a hobby; a safehaven is a safehaven, which deserves to be protected by its citizens.
POWERS & ABILITIES:
→ combat proficiency
Kaeya's weapon of choice is a sword, and he's fairly good with it? He favors flashy techniques with a ton of added Flair, because that is just... who he is, as a person. As a knight, though, it's fair to assume that he's trained with/is capable of wielding a variety of weapons—and as the Cavalry Captain™, it's safe to assume that he's halfway decent on horseback. He also has some decent stamina, given that his ~special ability~ decreases the party's stamina consumption while sprinting... he's fast...
→ vision
In Teyvat, certain people are blessed by the gods, able to harness an element through what is known as a Vision. Kaeya, specifically, was granted a Cryo Vision, meaning that he can harness the power of ice. He can, say, summon a small wall of it with a snap of his fingers (as seen in the webcomic), but he typically uses his Vision in one of two ways: a) casting a frigid blast forward, freezing enemies directly ahead of him, or b) summoning three icicles that revolve around him for a short amount of time, damaging anything they come in contact with.
→ clever, take 2
I know I've already mentioned it, but Kaeya is clever—and this means that he possesses a keen strategic mind. He's the sort to predict, like, twenty ways someone will react and plan accordingly? Prefers to lure enemies into areas he knows well, if not tightly controls. He is the strategist for the Knights of Favonius back in Mondstadt, well-known for his unconventional tactics and way of thinking, so... he really isn't someone to be taken lightly!
SUITABILITY:
Kaeya is a chameleon; he is liar who is used to tailoring his approach to his surroundings, so playing nice in this (admittedly strange) new world? Trading favors for favors, be it something as simple as physical contact or something as complicated as a faction-specific privlege? Easy. He will do his best to charm both PCs and NPCs, carefully observing both groups to learn how, exactly, to freely move between them. It never hurts to get as many people on your side as possible—and to learn how everyone operates, because while everyone seems friendly now...
Adjusting to the overall idea of being In Hell may prove a bit more challenging, in the sense that it is a) interesting, b) concerning, given all that he's yet to accomplish in his world, and c) may offer him a unique advantage in certain situations. On the one hand, he's used to feeling like a bit of an outsider; he won't be particularly bothered by whatever odd looks he happens to draw, as he makes his way through his faction, but on the other hand, he's a peacock of man? Used to maintaining strict control over his appearance/reputation, because his appearance/reputation is a weapon, of sorts; he uses it to attract attention and to distract from whatever else he may be doing, so having even a fraction of that control stripped away from him will be—well! He won't like it, and will thus have to find some way to deal with it. I'm looking forward to figuring out how!
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten
Quite honestly, this might be the faction that Kaeya least vibes with—which is not to say that he wouldn't find some way to take advantage of it, because of, he would. Even meatheads need a brain? Eventually? A Thinker to a) pull them free from current scrapes and b) set them up for future success. Kaeya can be that person—for the right price! Which may come in the form of free drinks and fun times, because hey: he's always here to have a good time, baybee—
Tamamo
—which leads right into this faction, because seeking relief from a stressful world is kind of Kaeya's thing. As I mentioned above, he's a bit of a boozehound; between his past lies and his current deceptions, his life is so complicated as to warrant a drink or... five, so! He'd fit right in here! Put him behind a bar for a change of pace; let him charm people into paying more for top shelf liquor because listen: while he can and will flirt, he is far from an effective honeypot. The Kaeya motto: look, but don't even try to touch.
That said—Kaeya is beautiful.
Sutoku Alliance
Collecting information is, like, Kaeya's bread and butter? Kaeya's day-to-day. He is good at charming others into giving him what he wants/needs—so he would honestly Vibe in this faction, despite his lack of knowledge re: technology. The nerds can deal with that stuff! He will be out in the field, aka the bars... he will collect gossip the old-fashioned way, ie listening in on other's conversations and/or wining and dining someone until he gets what he wants...
...Honestly, he would be such an asset to this faction. It needs some manner of Tamamo-wothy members to stay afloat, right!
Department of the Enma
Order above all else? Pass. Kaeya does enjoy a bit of well-contained chaos—but also: Kaeya is a knight! Both in practice and at heart. He'd like to protect as many people as he can; he'd like to deal with threats as they come, because while some people shy away from the front lines, Kaeya is here to make his presence known. Come at him, if you dare... he has the power of his fellow cops on his side...
(He's also perfectly suited for the Shady Cop role? Accepting money from all, just to share information + "protect" them—while really keeping track of their movements + their threats. Very Sutoku of him, honestly... he is a sketchy man...)
